Chairman`s New Year Speech and Honours List
Five major things happened in 2009 that in my view are the catalysts for the future success of our football club. In January the MUGA and associated club redevelopment project went from what seemed like a relentless gentle simmer to near boiling point in a matter of weeks and it was clear that our organisation needed a professional project manager to handle the increasing and complex workload. I was therefore, absolutely delighted when a colleague of mine at Lincolnshire County Council (and current Collingham U9’s manager) Peter Fender agreed to come on board and bring us his expertise in handling large capital projects and in particular his experience of ‘bid’ funding. The second was the unanimous support of the club trustees shown to the current management committee to pursue the sale of the current training area in order to reinvest the proceeds in the proposed redevelopment. The third was the annual general meeting held in May where (in my short committee experience) for once on the night we did not have to ring several of Val’s friends and relatives to come and make the event a legitimate one. The upshot of this was we had a very successful AGM and elected a formidable committee that combines old school football club expertise with fresh professional commercial acumen (more of this later). The fourth was gaining Charter Standard Club status after a number of years hard work from Pat Douglas and others. The fifth was winning the Newark and Sherwood District Council Sports Club of the year award against strong competition including Collingham Cricket Club.
The state of play with regard to our redevelopment plans as of the end of December 2009 is following the presentation at the Memorial Hall by the Lincoln Cooperative Society (and the two-week consultation period thereafter) events are following traditional planning protocols and processes. We can by no means be complacent that this scheme will actually happen; there is a lot of work still to be done by all of the organisations involved if we are to realise our future aspirations of having an all weather training pitch, 21st Century changing rooms and a clubhouse with function rooms the envy of any top quality amateur football club.
Success and progress was also evident on the pitch with Pat Douglas’s U11’s winning their league title and Les and Darryl’s under 14’s finishing runners up in theirs. These were the pinnacle of our teams achievements in what was an excellent and rewarding season for all our JFC sides. The senior teams also enjoyed some success, with the reserves narrowly avoiding relegation but perhaps more importantly fielding a full eleven players every week despite indifferent results. The first team had some notable victories but early exits from the cup rounds meant a promising season petered out somewhat. However, one of the major reasons our club has managed to keep going for over 100 years is holding onto the philosophy of signing as many eligible Collingham (or local) players as possible as well as giving ex-CFCJFC players a chance to play in senior football when they are old enough. All of the above critical success factors added up in the judge’s minds as the reasons why we were chosen as the N&SDC Sports Club of the Year for 2009 sponsored by Boundary Sound. I am personally very proud of this achievement and intend to put CFC forward for more awards that recognise hard work and endeavour.
I am confident that 2010 will be as rewarding, exciting and as challenging as the one that has just gone. We are hopeful that N&SDC and Sport England will see the overall benefit to the sport lovers of Collingham of our redevelopment scheme and grant the Lincoln Cooperative Society the requisite planning permission. Our committee will continue to dedicate a considerable amount of their spare time in delivering a first class venue for people of all ages and abilities to play football. This however, cannot be done without money and with this in mind last summer the entertainment section of our committee put together a fantastic package of varying events to suit most tastes. These ranged from a Celebration of 50 years of Motown night to a quiz evening that had a first prize of £50. To say that support for most of these nights has been lukewarm is somewhere shy of the truth and we have actually lost a small amount of money so far. The blue-ribbon event on the programme however, is the last one (31st January 2010) on the bill ‘The Lee Lard Peter Kay Tribute Act’ and we are hopeful that a full house will swing us back into some kind of profit. Tickets are still available from committee secretary Diane Smith (Tel: 01636 893138)
On the 1st December 2009 due to the unreliability and now terminal failure of our current grass-cutting machine we were forced into spending £3,500 on a very good secondhand 3-gang mower. This kind of capital expenditure although not a normal annual cost, helps demonstrate where our membership monies go. Some months ago the adult section on their face book website quite reasonably questioned why the fees needed to be as high as the current £45. Well with 200 playing members divided in to the cost of that mower shows you that just a one off purchase equates to £17.50 per member. Furthermore, when you start to consider that we have purchased this season alone a new line marker (£350), two new sets of adult sized aluminium goals (£1,500) and two flat screen televisions (£700) for the bar and you can soon begin see how the money is quickly swallowed up. My question to all our valued members is that if supporting an excellent programme of entertainment events (as mentioned above) is not your bag (as ably demonstrated by the lack of support at them) then can you suggest other ways for us to bring in funds to the club? In the last trading year we made a profit of £1,000 on a t/o of £88k so our over the bar profits won’t be much help again this year.
Because of some of the changes the committee has made to the running of the club we do anticipate a rosier financial future in 2010 and beyond but we cannot survive on current income alone. So to start to redress any funding gaps in the spring we have penciled in a members and sponsors day for the last Saturday in April where we hope to have a partner club bring over a number of teams in all our JFC age groups to play against ours. This will also allow us also to say thank you to all our supporters, business friends and family members past and present for everything they have done for us, from making the teas right through to laying bricks for the original clubhouse. Of course there will be the usual end of season 5-a-side JFC tournaments in May that have been the financial life-blood of the club for the last 10 years but season’s end always brings with it large maintenance costs and so it has always been.
Happy New Year
